Didn’t like the dentist growing up and never thought I’d become one, but when I was a senior in college, you know, as a biology major trying to decide what I wanted to do with my life, I actually went on a mission trip with the church I went to at the time and there was a dentist with us and we were in the middle of nowhere in Honduras and there was such a need there that the dentist gave me about a 10-minute training session on how to give a shot and how to pull teeth and pulled about 30 teeth in the next few days, so it was a kind of an eye-opening experience and just from there decided it was something that I’d definitely be interested in, just seeing how grateful people were to be out of pain and to have things like that done, so that’s really what what first got me interested in doing it. There’s a few really rewarding areas for me. One, when somebody comes in, whether it’s dentures or doing a full mouth rehab, and they say, you know, this is the first time I’ve smiled in 30 years.
It’s the first time, you know, I haven’t been ashamed to, you know, smile and show how happy I am just being out in public, and then just the small things, too, of people, you know, getting up from the chair and saying, wow, that wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be, so just those small wins of helping people through and through their anxiety and being able to keep everything healthy despite their fear of coming to the dentist.
